Meet our Rabbi
Rabbi Karen Companez was ordained at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in May 2002. In a previous life, she worked as an administrative assistant to the Director of Development of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, amongst other positions.
She was very active in many voluntary capacities in her congregation in Melbourne, Australia. She was instrumental in the founding of a lay-led Reform congregation, and she was one of the founding members of the Reform Zionist youth movement, Netzer, in Melbourne Australia.
Rabbi Companez has been the rabbi of Temple Beth El since August 2002.
During that time she has conducted a three-session Taste of Judaism course, designed to introduce people to the basics of Judaism. This course attracted about 50 people from the Flint and surrounding areas.
As a follow-up to this, she is facilitating a more complete Introduction to Judaism course designed for those possibly interested in ultimately converting to Judaism, as well as for those who want to learn more about their Judaism. She has also run a course in basic Hebrew for adults
Rabbi Companez lived in Israel for over four years and is fluent in Hebrew.
Rabbi Companez is committed to building Jewish community and to helping people feel that their contributions to the community are of value.
